Something we did instead of a vacation this summer: a 20 page sewn pamphlet. As with “Imaginary Letters by Mary Butts”, the beautiful decorations are by Lupe Núñez.
We found the text while looking through the marvellous Modernist Journals Project. So much treasure in there.
“Vacation in Brittany” by Gertrude Stein, written in 1920 and first published in The Little Review in 1922. In the original, it’s spelled Brittany in the index and Britany in the main text. I like how Britany looks, but as far as we could establish that was a typo. We asked some academics and even the Beinecke Library at Yale, and they were very helpful but the Stein archives are as locked down as we are. More so, in fact.
